About
Seattle, Washington
started a trend when they raised their minimum wage to $15. Yes, this is America’s
highest minimum wage. This wage will be official in the year 2018. Although
this may be a drastically high wage, the raise in Seattle has started a trend nationwide. Cities, counties, and states
have followed in the increasing of minimum wage, including parts of the state
of Maryland.
On October 1st, 2014 in Montgomery County, Maryland, minimum wage rose from its past wage of $7.25 to $8.40, which is a lot more money with which to fill the piggy banks. This means that any employee currently working and being paid minimum wage in Montgomery County received a pay raise on October 1st. Not all workers were required to receive a raise if they were making above $8.40 prior to this date.
Workers are at the greatest advantage. By raising the minimum wage, workers will receive more money per hour and pay check. This raise will be continuous over a couple of years. The minimum wage in the year 2017 will be up to $11.50 per hour. In contrast to the workers are their employers. Employers are at a disadvantage because they will be spending more of their profit on the workers earning them the profit. The members of the Montgomery County community are also affected because of the consequential increase in prices around the county.
There is a mix in affluence throughout the cities of Montgomery County. In cities such as Potomac and Olney, there are some very wealthy people who seem to be mostly unaffected by this increase. However in cities such as Germantown and parts of Rockville there are some very poor people and families. The affluent citizens can afford to pay the increase in prices however the poorer men and women require the higher wages. The increase in minimum wage is beneficial to Montgomery County, but, just like anything else, has its disadvantages.
