Workers
Workers include teenagers. Teenagers will generally seek out jobs
to make a little money. When minimum wage rose, there was a greater incentive
for teenagers to give up their “down time” and search the yellow pages
(although almost every application can be done online now).
Teenagers that previously had jobs received a $1.15 raise per hour of work. The extra money adds up quickly and helps teenagers saving up for college, a car, and even for his or her sweetheart. From personal experience, I received an increase in pay when minimum wage increased. This is extremely helpful since I am a commuter student who pays for my own gas. I spend about $150 on gas per month, just by driving to classes. By raising minimum wage, more teenagers will be encouraged to apply for jobs and keep them from participating in worse things, such as gang related violence and overall crime. Maybe the teenage crime rate for theft will decrease because of this increase in minimum wage. Furthermore, the raise in minimum wage only presents positive outcomes for teenagers.
Another group positively affected by minimum wage is the workers who experience discrimination. Some employers are racist, some are sexist, some are both, and some would not care if their employee was a purple horse. Unfortunately the first three exist. Some minorities may have underpaid because of the color of their skin. Some genders may have been underpaid because of their gender. The raise in minimum wage requires employers, by law, to raise the salaries of the men and women earning only $7.25. The extra $1.15 could help the people discriminated against pay their bills, feed their children, and even afford medical bills. Some activists argue that this is still not a sufficient wage to live off of, for people to pay bills and feed their families, however the raise is better than no raise at all.
Workers in Montgomery County, MD that were receiving minimum wage can be thankful for the recent increase in minimum wage. The most affected group is actually women. Teenagers and minorities are now being paid more justly.
